June & the Satellites are a six-piece indie-soul and cinematic instrumental band from Chicago. Led by June Avery, they set Rhodes, upright bass, tenor saxophone, flute, drums, and hand percussion around songs about night shifts and late trains. Their new LP, Night Train to Dearborn, was recorded live to tape.

June & the Satellites are a six-piece indie-soul and cinematic instrumental band from Chicago. Singer June Avery started the group in a South Loop rehearsal room with Rhodes player Marisol Vega and bassist Desmond Pryor, and the lineup grew to include tenor saxophonist and flutist Theo Banks, drummer Kenji Abe, and percussionist Ama Lyle. Their music sits between late-night soul and film score: long instrumental passages, close harmony, and songs about night shifts, commuter trains, and the city after the bars close. Night Train to Dearborn, their new LP, was recorded live to two-inch tape over three days at Grand Crossing Sound with engineer Ruth Okonkwo. Every take on the record was played by the full band in one room, without overdubs or edits inside a song. On stage they play the whole album in sequence, then stretch out, with sets that run from forty-five minutes to two full hours.
